The Best Part of My Day Starts at the Front Door

The Best Part of My Day Starts at the Front Door

There are a hundred reasons to look forward to coming home. But if you're a Dog Mom, chances are your favorite one has four paws and has been waiting all day to hear your key in the door.

There are days when pulling into the driveway feels like crossing a finish line.

You've worked all day. You've answered questions, run errands, dealt with traffic, thought about dinner, remembered three things you forgot to do, and somehow added five more things to tomorrow's list.

Then you reach the front door.

Before you've even turned the knob, somebody on the other side already knows you're there.

Maybe it's the familiar click-click-click of toenails racing across the floor.

Maybe there's barking.

Maybe there's a toy being frantically located because apparently you cannot properly return home unless you're immediately presented with a slobbery stuffed animal.

And then the door opens.

For the next thirty seconds, you are quite possibly the most exciting person who has ever existed.

That's a pretty wonderful way to come home.

They Don't Care What Kind of Day You Had

Dogs have this remarkable ability to make the rest of the world disappear for a minute.

They don't know whether the meeting went badly.

They don't care that you forgot something at the grocery store.

They haven't checked your to-do list, your bank account, your inbox, or whether the laundry is still sitting in the dryer for the third day in a row.

They just know one very important thing:

You're home.

And apparently that deserves a celebration.

There's something wonderfully humbling about being greeted with that much enthusiasm simply for walking through a door.

Every Dog Has a Welcome-Home Routine

Some dogs bring toys.

Some spin in circles.

Some bark as though they need to alert the entire neighborhood that THE HUMAN HAS RETURNED.

Some immediately head toward the treat cabinet because clearly your arrival must mean refreshments are about to be served.

And some act completely uninterested...

until you sit down.

Then suddenly there's a dog beside you, on you, under your feet, or staring directly into your soul because you've been home for nearly four minutes and haven't provided the appropriate amount of attention.

Those little routines become so ordinary that sometimes we barely notice them.

But they're part of the rhythm of life with a dog.

Somehow, They Know

Then there are the quieter homecomings.

The days when you don't walk through the door laughing.

The days when you're exhausted, worried, disappointed, or simply worn down by life.

Dogs seem to notice those days too.

The greeting may still happen, but afterward something changes.

They stay a little closer.

A head finds your lap.

A paw lands on your leg.

Someone follows you from room to room without needing anything at all.

Dogs may not understand what happened during our day, but somehow they often understand us.

And sometimes their quiet company is exactly what we needed.

Home Isn't Really a Place

We spend so much time making our homes comfortable.

We choose furniture, hang pictures, fluff pillows, light candles, and fill rooms with the things we love.

But somewhere along the way, our dogs become part of what makes those rooms feel like home.

It's the dog bed in the corner.

The leash hanging by the door.

The toys that somehow migrate into every room.

The nose prints on the window you swear you're going to clean tomorrow.

The water bowl you almost trip over.

The fur on something you literally just washed.

And that familiar little face waiting for you at the end of the day.

Maybe home was never really about the house at all.

Maybe it's about knowing someone you love is there.

I Came Home for the Dog

Sometimes I think I came home because the day was over.

Because work was finished.

Because there were things waiting for me at the house.

But if I'm being completely truthful...

I came home for the dog.

For that adorably dramatic greeting.

For the tail wag.

For the familiar face.

For the little creature who somehow manages to make an ordinary Tuesday evening feel like a reunion.

And yes, that thought eventually became the inspiration behind our I Came Home for the Dog design.

Not because we needed another saying about dogs.

Because it made me laugh when I realized how incredibly true it was.

The Ordinary Moments Become the Important Ones

Here's the part we don't think about very often.

Someday, these routines won't feel ordinary anymore.

The toenails running toward the door.

The barking.

The toy dropped at your feet.

The dog who won't let you take your shoes off before demanding attention.

Even the little things that occasionally drive us crazy.

One day, we'll realize they were never little things at all.

They were pieces of a life we shared.

That's why maybe we shouldn't rush through every greeting.

Put the bag down.

Leave the phone alone for another minute.

Scratch behind those ears.

Throw the toy.

Let them tell you—in whatever silly little way your dog does—that they're really, really happy you're home.

Because there will always be something else that needs doing.

There won't always be another welcome home.

Apparently Mom Comes Home for Me

I don't really understand why this required an entire article.

Of course she comes home for me.

Who else would she be coming home for?

The laundry?

I have responsibilities when Mom gets home.

First, I must confirm that it is actually her.

Then I need to inspect anything she carried through the door because bags sometimes contain food.

Then I need to determine whether she encountered any other dogs while she was gone.

I have ways of knowing.

After that, I generally follow her around just long enough to remind her that she abandoned me for approximately seventeen years.

Then I resume my regularly scheduled activities.

Mostly snacks and naps.

Being someone's reason to come home is exhausting work.

🐾 Chief Dog Officer's Tip:
Always inspect the bags first. Humans are notorious for forgetting when they've brought you something.

Until Next Time...

The next time you open the door and you're greeted like you've been gone for a lifetime...

Take a deep breath.

Smile.

Put everything else down for just a minute and enjoy being someone's favorite person in the whole world.

Our days get busy. Our schedules fill up. And it's easy to believe there will always be another ordinary evening waiting for us tomorrow.

But our time with them is never quite long enough.

So enjoy the clicking toenails.

Enjoy the wagging tail.

Enjoy the adorably dramatic greeting.

Enjoy being welcomed home.

Because someday, some of the moments you'll miss the most will be the ones that once seemed completely ordinary.

With wagging tails,
